Name: Red (“Kitten’s Legacy”)

Bio: Never raced. Red is not friendly and will bite and squeal if he senses fear or is just feeling cranky. Red’s best Friends are Buddy and Aksel, but he generally prefers humans to horses as he was raised inside a house by two old ladies – his mother died during birthing. Red has lived at SHAR since he was 5 years old. He loves bananas and oranges.

Name: Weenie (”Napoleon Dynamite”)

Age: 4 years old

Size: 10 hand high (hh)

Breed: Miniature horse - gelding

Bio: Bought at auction for $275! Weenie has been at SHAR since he was 6 months old (a weanling) and thinks he is tougher than all of the other horses. Weenie’s favorite food is sugar cubes – they are just his size.

Name: Riff (“Moriathon”)

Age: 17 years old

Size: 15 hand high (hh)

Breed: Arabian gelding

Bio: Riff lives in his own field because he usually gets roughed up by the other horses or hovers over Buttercup. Loves to gallop across an open field. Riff’s favorite food is carrots.

Name: Nikki (“Nicholai’s Nickers”)

Age: 14 years old

Size: 14.3 hand high (hh)

Breed: Halfinger gelding

Bio: Nikki enjoys Martha’s company and will plow people over to get to food. Nikki has been diagnosed as “insulin resistant” and has had to be placed on a beet pulp diet which has allowed him to lose almost 300 lbs. Nikki’s favorite food is anything you have to offer.

Name: Aksel (“Knobby Aksel of Hanover”)

Age: 37 years old

Size: 15.3 hand high (hh)

Breed: Standardbred gelding

Bio: Former race horse, only successful in one race! Aksel is the highest ranking horse in his pasture, best friend is Red. He has been at SHAR since birth and had recently entered into semi-retirement. His favorite food is watermelon.

Name: Buddy (“Buddy-O-Bar”)

Age: 15 years old

Size: 15.3 hand high (hh)

Breed: Quarter Horse/ Appaloosa gelding

Bio: Buddy has been at SHAR since he was 6 months old. He is best friends with with Aksel and Red, but enjoys the company of Momma and Martha the most. Buddy’s favorite food is peppermints.

Name: Buttercup (“Bodacious Buttercup”)

Age: 8 years old

Size: 16.2 hand high (hh)

Breed: Appaloosa mare

Bio: Her parents are Printz’s grandparents. Buttercup came to SHAR untrained and has since become a star jumper…now if she would just put her head down. Favorite food is apples.

Age: 17 years old

Breed: Welsh/Quarter Horse cross mare

Bio: Martha came to us from a very strange man with a background that made no sense, but we took a chance on her anyway. Martha LOVES the boys! Favorite food is…anything!

Name: Ziggy (“Z Z Zig Zag”)

Age: 27 years old

Size: 15.3 hand high (hh)

Breed: Appaloosa gelding

Bio: Ziggy was donated to SHAR by a lovely couple (who compete in 3-day trail rides) in the hopes that he would excel at a new career. Ziggy gets along well with all other horses except for Buddy and has recently been diagnosed with Cushing’s Disease. Ziggy loves to give wet kisses to anyone who will allow it. His favorite food is gingersnap cookies.

Name: Cissy (“Miss Cissy Bar”)

Age: 21 years old

Size: 15.2 hand high (hh)

Breed: Paint/Quarter Horse mare

Bio: Cissy came to us 3 years ago and has become a wonderful therapy horse. Cissy is the least dominant horse at SHAR, but no less loved by the humans. Cissy has been in magazines, on billboards and is the “spokeshorse” for A Smile From Jason Foundation. She is a star! Her favorite food is apples.

Name: Printz (“Shady Hollow’s Printz”)

Age: 11 years old

Size: 15.3 hand high (hh)

Breed: Quarter Horse/Appaloosa gelding

Bio: Printz would rather spend his days lying around in a field than be ridden, but will usually muster up the energy to give a good lesson for students. Printz is a blood relative of Buttercup. His favorite food is whatever is convenient to where he is standing ( he loves to peek his nose into the Observation Room window to get treats).

Name: Momma (“Shadow Babe”)

Age: 23 years old

Size: 16 hand high (hh)

Breed: Standardbred mare

Bio: Momma has borne 6 live foals, only one of which was a colt (Billy, who still lives at SHAR). Momma was originally a harness racehorse, but retired to breeding and teaching lessons at SHAR. Momma is very quiet and sweet, but is also difficult to bring in from a pasture when she doesn’t feel like coming in. Her favorite food is licorice (red or black).

Name: Classy (“Classy Version”)

Age: 6 years old

Breed: Quarter Horse mare

Bio: Classy is the newest edition to SHAR. She previously worked at a Girl Scout Camp and is adjusting very well to life and lessons at SHAR. Classy enjoys being with other horses and does not like to be separated from the herd. Classy’s favorite food is peppermint or apple flavored treats.
